A Fresh Start with Art Journals

As we welcomed our students back for the new term this September, we began with something special – distributing personalized art journals to each student. You might wonder why we're so excited about these journals. Here's the thing: in today's digital world, kids are increasingly used to working on loose papers that often end up lost or thrown away. Their creative journey deserves better documentation!
These art journals represent a new approach we're bringing to our studio. Instead of scattered papers, students now have a dedicated space to collect their learning journey, preserve their techniques, and track their artistic growth throughout the term. Every sketch, every experiment, and every breakthrough will be captured in one meaningful place.

Starting with the Fundamentals
We believe in building strong foundations. So, Week 1 began gently with line drawing exercises. These fundamental techniques might seem simple, but they're the building blocks of all great art. Our students explored various line-making strategies, discovering how a single line can express emotion, movement, and texture.
Artist of the Month: Marc Chagall
This month, we're diving into the dreamlike world of Marc Chagall! Now, you might be thinking – why Chagall? His whimsical, floating compositions are perfect for teaching fundamental drawing concepts in an engaging way. Through Chagall's work, students learn to draw:
Goats and farm animals in dynamic poses
People floating or playing violin
Houses with personality
Fish and other creatures
Multiple objects in harmonious compositions
These might seem like basic subjects, but they're often overlooked in traditional art education. Rather than calling this unit "Drawing Farm Animals" (which, let's be honest, might sound boring to our Gen-Z students!), we're exploring these fundamentals through Chagall's magical lens.
Teaching for Today's Generation
After 15 years as an educator, I've learned that bringing fresh perspectives to classic lessons makes all the difference. By connecting basic drawing skills to Chagall's imaginative world, we're making learning both meaningful and exciting. Students aren't just drawing a goat – they're creating dream-like scenes where goats might fly over villages or dance with musicians!
Looking Ahead
Week 1 went wonderfully well. Students embraced their journals and showed genuine excitement about exploring Chagall's artistic universe. The energy in the studio has been fantastic. We're looking forward to Week 2, where we'll continue building on these foundations while diving deeper into Chagall's techniques and symbolism.
